Variegated ivy is a climbing houseplant with flexible trailing or clinging stems. The leaves are dense and leathery, with a striking pattern: a green background accented by cream, white, or light green marbling and edges. In the wax ivy variety, the leaf blade is glossier and fleshier, while the English ivy has the classic three- or five-lobed shape. In a pot, the plant looks full: the stems cascade beautifully from a planter or climb up a support.

You can place ivy on the windowsill of an east- or west-facing window, in a semi-shaded spot in the room, or on a shelf where the stems can hang freely. The plant is suitable for greening a home office, bedroom, or relaxation area, and also makes a fitting gift for a housewarming or birthday.

Care is simple. Ivy prefers diffused light without direct midday sun, although variegated forms lose the brightness of their pattern in insufficient light. Water moderately when the top layer of soil dries out, and less often in winter. Periodically wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
