The leaves of the warty gasteria grow in a dense rosette and seem to be strung together: short, fleshy, with a light waxy bloom and small pale bumps on the surface. In the variegated form, creamy stripes appear against the green background, while in Little Warty the rosette is especially compact, with frequent speckles. The leaf edges are smooth, without spines, so the plant is convenient to keep where it is often brushed against.

Place the pot in a bright spot but without direct midday sun: a windowsill of an east- or west-facing window will do. Gasteria tolerates the dry air of an apartment and is not afraid of short-term drought. Water rarely, letting the soil dry out completely, and pour water along the wall of the pot, avoiding the center of the rosette.

The compact rosette is suitable for a desktop, shelf, or in a composition with other succulents. The plant makes a good gift for a colleague or someone who is just starting a home collection.
