How to extend the life of nobilis in a vase

Nobilis can last a long time in a vase — the main thing is to care for them properly. Here are a few tips we've tested ourselves and recommend to you.

First, trim the stems right after delivery. Cut the stems with a sharp knife or pruners — about 2–3 centimeters at a 45-degree angle. This allows the stem to absorb more water, and the flowers stay fresh longer. When scissors are dull, they crush the stem's vessels, and moisture rises less easily.

Second, use a clean vase for the bouquet. Wash it with soap or soda to destroy bacteria from previous flowers. Fill the vase with room-temperature water — neither hot nor icy. Nobilis appreciate fresh water, so refresh it every two days. If the liquid becomes cloudy sooner, change it without delay.

Third, add a cut-flower food to the water. If a special food is included with the bouquet, use it according to the instructions. If there's no food, dissolve half a teaspoon of sugar and a couple of drops of lemon juice in the water — this will support the flowers and slightly slow bacterial growth. Don't overdo the sugar: too sweet water attracts microbes.

Fourth, remove any leaves that end up under water. Leaves under water quickly rot and spoil the water, making stems slippery and unable to drink well. Remove leaves carefully so as not to damage the stem.

Fifth, choose a suitable spot for the vase. Nobilis are harmed by direct sun, drafts, and heat from radiators. Place the vase in a room with soft light, away from air conditioners and heaters. At night, you can move the bouquet to a cool place — for example, a glazed balcony if it's warmer than +5 °C there. This will slow the opening of the buds and prolong freshness.

Sixth, mist the buds. Nobilis respond well to a fine spray of water. Mist once a day or every other day, but make sure droplets don't pool in the buds — excess moisture leaves spots. It's best to mist in the morning so the flowers dry by evening.

If a stem starts to wilt, remove it from the vase immediately. An infected stem can spoil the others. The same goes for fallen petals: it's better to throw them away at once so they don't rot in the water.
