Streptocarpus is a compact houseplant with velvety leaves gathered into a neat rosette. A young specimen d7 h10 is a baby: small but already forming a dense little bush. The leaf blades are elongated, slightly wrinkled, and rich green. Over time, the plant sends up tubular flowers that open into a funnel and stand above the foliage.

A 7 cm pot fits easily on a windowsill of an east- or west-facing window: the light should be bright but diffused, without direct midday rays. A shelf with a grow light will also work. In shade, the shoots stretch out and buds may not form.

Water moderately when the top layer of soil dries out: use soft water at room temperature, carefully under the leaves or in the saucer. Stagnant moisture in the pot harms the roots, so pour off excess water from the saucer. Repot the young plant into a slightly larger pot as the root system grows. Such a little bush will decorate a windowsill and become the first plant for a beginner gardener.
