Here are a few general tips that work with almost any flowers, including alstroemerias.

First, let the flowers get used to the room. If the bouquet came in from outside, do not put it immediately under an air conditioner or in a draft. Let it stand in the room for twenty to thirty minutes, and then go get a vase.

Second, prepare the vase in advance. The cleaner the vase, the fewer bacteria that clog the stems and prevent the flowers from drinking.

Third, refresh the cut. Take a sharp knife or pruners and cut a couple of centimeters off each stem at an angle — this gives a larger absorption area. Dull scissors or a knife crush the stem, and that shortens the bouquet's life.

Fourth, remove anything unnecessary. Leaves that end up under water are best torn off: they quickly rot and spoil the water. Alstroemeria stems usually have enough foliage at the top, so the lower part can be safely cleaned.

Apples, bananas, and other fruits release a substance that speeds up flower wilting. Also avoid direct sunlight, radiators, and heaters — alstroemerias like coolness and diffused light.

Sixth, change the water. Each time you change the water, repeat trimming the stems by a couple of centimeters.

Seventh, do not fill the vase to the brim. A third or half is enough — this way the stems stand more easily, and the water stays fresh longer. And do not put the bouquet in a vase that is too tight: the stems need a little space.

Finally, if one flower does start to wilt, do not rush to throw out the whole bouquet. Remove it, refresh the cut on the rest, and change the water. Often after that the arrangement looks lively again.
