Yellow roses — for breaking up: allsuperstitions and beliefs about sunny colors

Men are afraid to give ladies flowers with lemon petals. It is believed that this leads to separation. And if they do give them, girls perceive the gift with caution: is the loved one hinting that the relationship has run its course?

Maybe Natasha Koroleva is to blame for it all, who sang in the 90s that "yellow tulips are messengers of parting"? Or maybe Vadim Kazachenko and his song about yellow roses — a "farewell bouquet"?

No, the symbolism of yellow flowers is far more ancient and deeper. But whether it is worth fearing is an open question.

Canary color and psychology

Psychologists, for example, would categorically disagree that yellow flowers can be a sign of  something bad, and that the sunny shade can carry negative energy. According to their observations, yellow:

  • increases the rate of breathing and heartbeat;
  • instills optimism, joy;
  • activates brain activity;
  • promotes memorization;
  • develops intellect.

And this is not just theory. American art historian Faber Birren spent his whole life studying colors and their influence on people. On his recommendation, the pages of telephone directories began to be made yellowish (the famous Yellow Pages) to ease the monotonous work of telephone operators.

For the same reasons (attracts attention, is memorable), yellow is used for road signs and legal documents.

People who choose canary-colored things are purposeful, persistent, decisive, creative, and cheerful.

Yellow in the culture of different countries

Different peoples have different meanings for the color yellow. But in most cases, especially in the East, it is interpreted positively.

In Japan, for example, it symbolizes generosity, nobility, courage. Before battles, ancient Japanese warriors pinned bright yellow chrysanthemums to their clothing to give themselves courage. For them, giving yellow flowers is definitely not a bad omen.

In India, it is the color of the sun, gold, prosperity, successful deals.

In China, it is a symbol of power. Wearing yellow clothing in this country used to be allowed only to members of the imperial family.

In Egypt and Jordan, yellow is the color of mourning ceremonies.

Taxis in the USA are painted in the shade of egg yolk as a sign of their swiftness and agility.

In Europe, the perception is more often negative. The color is associated with jealousy, infidelity, betrayal, envy.

The legend of the unfaithful wife

If we reason logically, the Eastern interpretation of the straw color seems more reasonable. Nature colored the gentle warm sun, ripe juicy fruits, wheat, beautiful bright flowers in it. So where does the negativity in the perception of Europeans and Egyptians come from?

Perhaps it is because it is the color of autumn, of beautiful but dying autumn foliage. Or maybe the reason for the bad attitude lies in an old legend about an unfaithful wife.

According to this story, a prince returning from a long military campaign suspected his wife of infidelity. To test his suspicions, he gave the woman red roses and insisted that she place them at the head of her bed. Overnight, the scarlet buds turned yellow, which meant infidelity. Since then, the meaning of the yellow rose has been infidelity, betrayal, separation.

But there is a version of this legend in which the heroes are the prophet Muhammad himself and one of his wives, Aisha. The experiment with the rose confirmed Muhammad's suspicions — the flower turned yellow. But later it was proven that Aisha had been slandered, and Allah vindicated her. It turns out the yellow rose is also deceitful!

Prejudices

So what do yellow roses mean if a man gives them to you: a confession of infidelity, an attempt to part beautifully?  Or a wish for success, prosperity, courage?

We would not want to disappoint you, but most likely, neither. Men rarely take an interest in the meaning of flowers in a bouquet or think about the symbolism of shades. They choose a bouquet, just like a woman, on the principle of "like it or don't like it." A simply luxurious bright arrangement caught their attention in the flower shop — that's all!

There is another option: your cheerfulness, brightness, sincerity are associated in his mind with the positive lemon shade. He saw the bouquet — he thought of you.

If a brave man has decided to break up, he will tell you so to your face; if he is cowardly, he will write in a messenger. And neither of them knows anything about the meaning of the yellow rose, believe me.

Without prejudices

Or maybe a bouquet "the color of the morning star" brings misfortune, is an accidental sign of separation, like a black cat — an omen of coming failures?

That is hardly likely either. If such a pattern existed, it would have been noticed not only by Europeans but also by Japanese, Chinese... The different meanings among different peoples suggest that there are no patterns or true omens. There is culture, myths, and the influence of people on each other. Well, the yellow color of roses in India cannot foretell a successful deal, while in Germany — a quarrel. It is simply that Indians relate to it one way, and Germans another.

And yet, to a man choosing a bouquet for his beloved in our catalog, we advise checking whether the girl believes in such omens, whether an ill-considered gift would upset her.

To colleagues, friends, business partners, and women without prejudices — give boldly. Yellow tulips, roses, and mimosas can bring only creative uplift, energy, and a great mood into life.
