Calathea Makoyana immediately catches the eye with its striking leaf pattern: broad oval leaves are marked with alternating dark green and light stripes, and the undersides are a rich purple. The rosette grows compactly, with petioles lifting the foliage upward to form a neat clump that looks equally good on a windowsill or a shelf.

Place the plant in a spot with soft, diffused light—direct sunlight will scorch the leaves. An east- or west-facing window works well, as does a shelf deeper in the room with supplemental lighting. Water moderately when the top layer of soil dries out, using settled water at room temperature. Calathea loves humid air, so it helps to place the pot near a container of water or a humidifier, avoiding misting the leaves themselves.
