Stem. Cut it at an angle with a sharp knife, not scissors — this way the cut is less damaged and the flower drinks water better. Renew the cut under running water or place the stem in the vase immediately — an air lock inside the capillaries prevents moisture from reaching the flower.

Water. Pour cool, settled water. Change the water every day or every other day — hyacinths are sensitive to its cleanliness. Each time you change the water, rinse the vase and renew the cut by shortening the stems by a couple of millimeters.

Level. The water should cover the stems about one-third, no higher. If the bloom is submerged, it will soak and lose its shape faster.

Place. Keep the vase away from sun, heaters, air conditioners, and drafts. A cool place without sharp temperature changes is best. Do not place the vase near fruit: the ethylene they release speeds up wilting.

Nutrition. If you have a cut-flower food, add it to the water. Without it, dissolve a teaspoon of sugar and a drop of lemon juice in a liter of water — this provides gentle support. Change the solution along with the water.

Blooms. Remove wilted flowers from the cluster: this way the remaining ones last longer. If the stem starts to bend, tie it to a thin support or move it to a vase with a narrower neck.

Fragrance. Hyacinths have a strong scent. In a small bedroom, this can interfere with sleep — it's better to take the vase to the living room or balcony for the night. In a cool place, the fragrance is softer and the bloom lasts longer.

Bulb. If you receive a hyacinth with a bulb, do not cut it off or separate it: it continues to nourish the plant. After blooming, the bulb can be kept and planted — but that's a separate story, and we're always happy to advise on what to do with it.
