Aucuba is an expressive indoor tree, often chosen as a gift for a housewarming or as a token of appreciation for a colleague. A young plant with a pot diameter of 12 cm and a height of 25 cm looks neat and compact: leathery glossy leaves with golden speckles form a lush crown, and the upright stem gives it the shape of a miniature tree. Such an aucuba is suitable for a windowsill or desktop — it doesn't take up much space and looks good as a single planting.

It is best to place the plant in partial shade or in diffused light: direct sunlight leaves burns on the leaves, and in deep shade the characteristic variegation disappears. Water moderately, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out; in winter, less often — about once a week. Wipe the leaves periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust. A young aucuba tolerates shaping pruning well and eventually turns into a dense little tree.
