Golden aucuba is an evergreen shrub with large, leathery leaves speckled with bright yellow dots and spots. This variegated coloring persists year-round and makes the plant noticeable even away from a window. Indoors, the bush spreads wide, forming a dense crown, so it needs a spot where its branches won't press against walls or furniture. It suits greening a living room or office, and also makes a gift for a housewarming or birthday.

It's best to place aucuba in partial shade or in light without direct sunlight: bright sun causes the leaves to lose their spotted pattern and develop brown scorch marks. Variegated forms still need sufficient light, otherwise the speckles will fade. Water moderately, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out—stagnant water in the pot is harmful to the roots. In winter, reduce watering and lower the temperature to cool conditions. In summer, it's helpful to mist the leaves and wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dust. Pinch young shoots for a denser crown. The plant tolerates pruning well and keeps its shape for a long time.
