How to Keep a Gifted Bouquet

The bouquet has arrived, the photo has been received, the recipient is smiling — now it's important that the flowers last as long as possible. Here are a few simple habits that really help.

Put the flowers in water immediately. Don't leave the bouquet in its packaging all evening: the sooner the stems are in water, the better. If the bouquet had to wait a few hours for you, that's okay — just don't delay with the vase any longer.

Refresh the cut. With a sharp knife or pruners, cut a couple of centimeters off the stem at about a 45-degree angle. This gives the stem more surface area to absorb water. Pruners or a knife are preferable to scissors: the latter crush the stem and hinder moisture uptake. Cut the stem under water or place the flower in water immediately.

Choose a suitable vase. The vase should be roomy: stems don't need to be crowded. Fill the vase about two-thirds full. If the vase is tall and narrow, heavy buds may lean to the side — in that case, it's better to use a stable, wider container.

Change the water regularly. Every day or every other day, pour fresh room-temperature water. At the same time, rinse the vase inside — the film that settles serves as a breeding ground for bacteria. Each time you change the water, trim the stems by a centimeter.

Remove leaves from the water. If leaves end up under water, they quickly rot and spoil it. Remove them right away when you put the bouquet in the vase. This is one of the most common reasons flowers wilt prematurely.

Avoid heat and drafts. Radiators, heaters, air conditioners, and direct sunlight are not suitable for flowers. Fruits near the vase release ethylene — it makes flowers wilt faster.

Add flower food. Dissolve the packet of flower food from the bouquet in water according to the instructions. If you don't have any, you can skip folk remedies like sugar and vinegar: they don't always work and sometimes harm. It's better to simply change the water and trim the stems on time.

Watch the buds. Remove flowers that have wilted before the others from the vase. This way they won't spoil the look of the whole arrangement or speed up the wilting of their neighbors. Some buds open gradually — this is normal, the bouquet will change from day to day.

Don't leave the vase in a draft by the front door. Temperature changes and air currents dry out the petals. It's better to choose a calm spot in the room where there is no constant air movement.
