How to Care for Orchids at Home

With proper care, an orchid stays fresh for more than a week. A few simple techniques will help the flowers last longer in a vase.

1. Water is key, but don't overdo it. Orchids dislike stagnant moisture. If you received a bouquet in a vase, don't add water too often. It's better to check how moist the substrate is or how the cut looks. A potted orchid should be watered only after the top layer of soil becomes dry. In the UAE the climate is dry, but that doesn't mean the flower should be flooded — excess water kills roots faster than drought.

2. Light — bright but diffused. Direct sunlight can leave burns on the leaves. Place the orchid where there is plenty of light but no scorching sun. Ideally, an east or west window. If natural light is insufficient, you can use a grow light.

3. Temperature and drafts. Orchids cannot tolerate sudden changes. Do not place the plant near an air conditioner or an open window where there is a draft. Room temperature suits most varieties, but at night it is desirable to have it slightly cooler — this stimulates blooming.

4. Pruning the flower spike. Wilted flowers are not a reason to cut the entire spike. New buds sometimes awaken on it. If the spike starts to yellow and dry out, cut it a couple of centimeters above a dormant bud. Use a sterile tool to avoid infection.

5. Fertilizing. During blooming, orchids do not need frequent fertilizing. It is enough to feed once a month with a special orchid fertilizer. If the flower is in a pot, monitor the condition of the roots: healthy roots are green or silvery, not brown and soft.

6. Humidity. In the UAE the air is often dry, so orchids may suffer from lack of moisture. You can place an open container of water next to the orchid or turn on a humidifier. Spray the leaves carefully so that water does not accumulate in the leaf axils — this can lead to rot.

7. Don't move it unnecessarily. Orchids get used to a place. If you constantly move the pot, the flower may drop its buds. Choose a good spot and don't move the pot again.
