Trim the stems. Before placing the flowers in water, cut 2–3 centimeters off the stem at an angle. It's easier to hold the stem under running water — this way air won't get into the cut. Use a clean sharp knife or pruner for cutting — scissors can crush the stem.

Choose a stable vase. The heavy buds of amaryllis can tip over, so the vase needs a wide base. Pour enough water to cover about a third of the stem, no more. Don't pour too much water — it can speed up rotting.

Change the water every two days. Even clear water accumulates bacteria harmful to stems. Each time you change the water, rinse the vase and shorten the stems again. Changing water with stem trimming noticeably delays wilting.

Add flower food. Dilute a special cut-flower product in water strictly according to the package instructions. If you don't have a special product, add half a teaspoon of sugar and one drop of lemon juice per liter of water. With sugar and lemon juice, it's important not to overdo it — excess sweetness harms the flowers.

Keep away from fruits and drafts. Proximity to fruits and air currents accelerates the wilting of amaryllis. Direct sunlight and air conditioning are also not the best neighbors for amaryllis. Choose a semi-shaded spot away from heating devices.

Remove wilted buds. As soon as a flower starts to wilt, carefully cut it off. This way the remaining buds stay fresh longer. Don't leave fallen petals in the water — they quickly spoil it.

Don't place amaryllis next to other plants. Some flowers release substances that shorten the life of neighbors. It's better to give amaryllis a separate vase.
