The royal gloxinia gives the impression of living velvet when presented: large bell-shaped flowers face upwards, and soft leaves form a neat rosette. In the Mont Blanc variety, the petals are pure white; in Moon Shadow, deep violet with a silvery sheen; in Royal, rich purple. The plant is compact, with sturdy stems, so it holds its shape well and is suitable for placing on a windowsill or coffee table.

Gloxinia likes bright but diffused light: direct sunlight causes the leaves to lose turgor, so it is best to place the pot on an east- or west-facing window. Water moderately with warm, settled water, directing the stream along the edge of the pot so that drops do not fall on the leaves and tuber. The soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings. During flowering, the plant is not moved from place to place, otherwise the buds may drop.

Such a flower is appropriate as a gift for a birthday or anniversary for someone who is into indoor gardening.
