Variegated String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus variegatus) is a plant with trailing stems studded with round leaves that look like beads. Green with creamy and pinkish streaks, they are strung on thin stems and form a living cascade. In a 12 cm pot, it looks like a miniature green curtain. When given as a gift, it brings a smile: the unusual leaf shape seems designed by nature to surprise.

Place the plant on a bright windowsill or in a hanging planter where it receives soft, diffused light. Direct sunlight burns the leaves, while in shade the stems stretch out and lose their variegated coloring. The string of pearls looks great on a shelf where the stems hang freely downward.

Water moderately when the top layer of soil dries out. Overwatering is more dangerous than drought: the roots rot quickly. In winter, reduce watering, letting the soil dry out almost completely. The plant is suitable for a windowsill in an apartment or office, and makes a pleasant gift for a housewarming or birthday.
