How to Prolong the Life of Dahlias at Home

Dahlias will delight the eye if properly cared for. A few tips will help dahlias stay fresh longer.

Trim the stems. With a sharp knife, make a diagonal cut at a 45-degree angle. Cut under cool water so air doesn't get into the stems. Cut about 2–3 centimeters off the stem. Repeat the trimming every two days so the flowers can drink water freely.

Choose the right vase. Dahlias like space. The wider the neck, the better — stems shouldn't crowd together. Ideally, the vase should be filled with water to two-thirds. Before pouring water, wash the vase with soap — remnants of an old bouquet can cause bacteria.

Change the water daily. Yes, every day. Dahlias are sensitive to water cleanliness. If you don't have anything on hand, just add a teaspoon of sugar and a couple of drops of bleach — a proven folk method.

Remove excess leaves. All leaves that end up under water need to be plucked off. In water, they quickly deteriorate and make it dirty. Also remove the lower leaves that touch the edge of the vase — that way you give the flowers more air.

Keep away from sun and drafts. Dahlias don't like direct sunlight, radiators, or air conditioners. Find a spot for the bouquet in partial shade where there are no sharp temperature changes. The best place is a cool room with dim light.

Mist the petals. Once a day, you can lightly mist the buds with cool water from a spray bottle. This will increase the humidity around the flowers and keep them fresh. Just don't get it on the stems — excess moisture can make them start to rot.

Remove wilted flowers. If a bud has wilted, cut it off immediately. It releases ethylene, which speeds up the aging of the other flowers. That way you'll keep the bouquet in shape longer.

Keep away from fruit. Fruit releases gas that is harmful to flowers. Don't leave the vase with dahlias near apples, bananas, and other fruits.
