Calathea Makoyana immediately catches the eye with its striking leaf pattern: broad oval leaves are marked with alternating dark green and light stripes, and the undersides are a rich purple. The rosette grows compactly, with petioles lifting the foliage upward to form a neat clump that looks equally good on a windowsill or a shelf.

Place the plant in a spot with soft, diffused light—direct sunlight will scorch the leaves. An east- or west-facing window works well, as does a shelf deeper in the room with supplemental lighting. Water moderately when the top layer of soil dries out, using settled water at room temperature.
